The Aikido Beginner’s Series is the foundation for a long-term martial arts practice. Offered twice a year for new and prospective students, this weekly series sets the groundwork for regular practice in the dojo, scaffolding the basics for steady progression into the dynamic sphere of aikido practice.
Each Monday will introduce concepts integral to aikido (and many other martial arts). As the series progresses, optional attendance in the Wednesday session will put the practice in the context of a regular training session. Students will learn how to roll and fall (ukemi); throw their partner using position and leverage (nage); and explore the principles of body movement (tai-sabaki), balance (kuzushi), and striking (atemi).
No experience or equipment is necessary. Wear loose clothes that cover the knees and elbows and bring an open mind. Tacoma Aikikai is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive space, mutually respecting people of all race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, background, faith, age, and ability.
Tacoma Aikikai operates on a sliding scale fee schedule for folks who need it: Full price: $80. Sliding scale/Need-based: $60. Free for members and no one turned away for lack of funds.
*Covid protocols include mask and vaccination requirements for indoor training, subject to change based on CDC recommendations.
